Alexander Laible, Riesling trocken "Chara" ***, 2010

After the epic ramble on which Torsten took you last time, along the sheer slopes of the Mosel valley and the bold challenges they afford the winemaker, it seems an uphill trek for me to interest you in a less dramatic setting for German Riesling. But I think I may have the region to do it, and the winemaker as well. The Place is the Ortenau, the Baden subregion made up by the last few hills of the Black Forest as it rolls gently down to the Rhine valley between Freiburg and Baden-Baden. A place of homely beauty, renowned for the richness of its cuisine and the temperateness of its climate, which is almost as sunny as Baden's Kaiserstuhl, but not quite as warm, with the cooler, pine-shaded Black Forest at its back. Riesling country.

The Winemaker: Alexander Laible, son of Andreas Laible, who has been for years, if not decades the uncontested number one among the winemakers of the Ortenau. Due to the enthusiastic press Alexander is getting, I have wanted to try one of his wines for some time, so I'll try not to lose too many introductory words now that the moment has arrived:

And it arrives with a bright straw-coloured wine smelling of very ripe peaches and apricots that have put all they have into smelling good. There is a salty minerality as well, and a minty, herbal seasoning. Altogether an unusually deep and enticing nose, and the palate follows this lead quite effortlessly:
Dense, pure peachiness with a touch of residual sweetness (which you would never think of as off-dry), dried fruit and a coat of white nougat, which the mineral depth that the nose has promised. This seems very ripe, but not yet aged.

Should be a treat for those who like their dry Riesling concentrated, juicy and ripe rather than tightly wound and challenging. This being said, Laible's three-starred Chara is neither unduly heavy in alcohol nor have its edges been softened beyond recognition. Prior praise well deserved, I should think.

Hi Julian

Thanks for your post. Being from Baden it's nice to read about Riesling in Baden as mostly Spatburgunder gets the attention and focus from the wine world and media.

I had a question about where in Baden it would be possible to purchase this wine, it is something you can only buy at the winery or do different wine stores and/or supermarkets carry it? Also about how much is the retail price?

Thanks and looking forward to reading more of your posts.

Cheers!
