Dr. Heger, Vitus Spätburgunder 2007
A fairly dark Pinot Noir, the 07 Vitus has a seriously dry nose: smoky, toasted oak, a little yeast and a little cherry fruit - more serious than playful, I would say. The wine is also not very fruity on the tongue, where leather and a hint of pepper are added to the mix. It does not feel heavy though, partly due to its fresh acidity. The finish is good, marinated cherries, acidity and tannins, but reasonably smooth, and a bit of woodland aroma with the tiniest hint of chocolate.
Yesterday night the finish had a noticeable bitterness to it, which gave the Vitus a somewhat stern character - 24h later that has appeared almost completely. Having this year sampled the 05 (very smooth and delicious) and the 06 (smooth and yummy), this leads me to believe the wine needs another year or two to appear less serious - or a bit of time with our friend Mr Decanter. A decent showing yesterday but only today up to its potential, I think. A good, somewhat serious Pinot Noir of the dry and less fruity variety. I like it.
